…City fathers ignored environmental warning

The Government will soon house the 43 families displaced by Budiriro 5B flood at flats it owns in Dzivaresekwa Extension, an official has said.
Department of Civil Protection chief director, Nathan Nkomo, said that the relocation is imminent.
The families were made homeless when their houses suffered damage following floods after heavy downpours that affected Harare and other parts of the country.
In a related development, information coming to light indicates that Harare City Council reportedly ignored an Environmental Impact Assessment warning that the Budiriro 5 Cabs area would face high flood risk.
The Environmental Management Agency reportedly condemned the houses but council failed to take preventive measures of improving drainage or shutting down the settlement.
Harare Mayor Clr Jacob Mafume has said that a permanent solution to the flood risk will be identified and implemented.
