His empathy towards others led him to become committed in providing justice and advocating on behalf of those who could not since he was young.
“I’m driven by a strong sense of empathy, a belief in the inherent dignity of all individuals, and a passion for effecting positive change in my society,” says human rights lawyer, Darlington Marange.
Marange is a human rights lawyer who recently won the Human Rights Tulip Award for his work in standing up for others who cannot do so themselves and make sure their voices are heard.
“I am honoured and humbled to announce that I have been selected as the recipient of the prestigious 2023 Human Rights Tulip Award. This award, presented by the Embassy of Netherlands in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia, recognises the courageous efforts of human rights defenders and organisations who have shown exceptional dedication in defending human rights through innovative means.
“It is with deep gratitude that I accept this award, as it serves as a testament to the tireless work of individuals and groups striving to make a difference in the world. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Dutch Government for acknowledging the significance of the work being done to promote and protect human rights globally. Their commitment to this cause inspires us all, and I am truly grateful for their support and recognition.
“I also wish to express my appreciation to the Zimbabwe Human Rights N.G.O Forum team for their unwavering support and guidance, as well as to my fellow colleagues who tirelessly fight for human rights in the face of challenging and often perilous circumstances. It is through our collective efforts that we can effect positive change and make a meaningful impact on the lives of those whose rights have been unjustly infringed upon.
“As we celebrate this achievement, let us continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the tulip of human rights blossoms in every corner of the world. Together, may we strive to create a future where the fundamental rights and dignity of all individuals are respected and upheld,” he says.
Challenges in the legal world are endless, and Marange was not exempted from such. He has faced the risks of being arrested and tortured, not mentioning the emotional toll of working with victims of human rights abuses.
“I have managed to overcome these challenges through resilience, strategic thinking, and a strong support network,” he added.
The Human Rights Tulip Award is an annual prize presented by the Dutch government to individuals or organisations that have made an exceptional contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights. The award aims to celebrate and honour the remarkable efforts and achievements of those dedicated to advancing human rights around the world.
