Zimbabwe’s Acting President, General (Rtd) Dr. Constantino Chiwenga, stressed the importance of constitutionalism in ensuring a robust justice system during a ceremony celebrating the 10th anniversary of the country's Constitution.

Speaking at a dinner hosted by Chief Justice Luke Malaba, Chiwenga emphasised the collaborative responsibility of various stakeholders in adhering to the Constitution’s principles. He highlighted the essential roles of not just the Judiciary, but also other entities, in guaranteeing compliance with its dictates.

“The function of these entities is to guarantee alongside the Judiciary compliance with the demands of the Constitution,” he stated, acknowledging the interconnectedness of different branches in upholding the rule of law.

While reaffirming the government’s commitment to judicial autonomy, Chiwenga emphasised the importance of a unified effort toward upholding constitutional values. He underscored Chief Justice Malaba’s emphasis on the separation of powers and the government’s respect for the judiciary’s independent exercise of its authority.

For Chief Justice Malaba, celebrating the Constitution signifies a commitment to good governance. He emphasised that obedience to its principles and norms manifests in the conscientious execution of constitutional duties by all actors within the justice system.

The anniversary celebration also saw the recognition of long-serving members of the Judicial Service Commission for their dedication to upholding the rule of law and service to the country.
