The Harare Athletics Board is set to host a track and field championships tournament on Sunday at the National Sports Stadium from 8 am to 1pm.
In an interview with Zim Now, Harare Athletics Board Vice Chairperson and Competition Director Aaron Th’alia C’allidi Whyte said athletes are going to pay a registration fee to cover costs on the day.
“The registration fee is paid by athletes to cover costs on the day.”
The registration fee is US$1 per event and US$2 for relays.
Athletes will participate in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m sprint events as well as 4x100m and 4x400m relays. On-field events there are all throws and jumps.
The age groups which are expected on the tournament are the Under 12, Under 14, Under 16, Under 18, Under 20 and the seniors.
The track and field championship tournament is an annual event on the calendar which is hosted at the opening of each year’s season.
Spectators can enter the tournament free of charge.
“Athletics is not yet a crowd puller, therefore we try to remove all hurdles that may keep people away from the track.
“Most people who come are parents and coaches who would have paid for the athletes to travel and compete. Our drive is not revenue collection but mass participation,” said Whyte.
The tournament is running under the theme, “New Year, New PBs, No to drugs.”
