A man who was caught loitering around magistrates’ chambers at Harare Magistrates’ Court will have his fate decided tomorrow.
Edwin Chapauka, 30, of Munyuki, Epworth, appeared before magistrate Simon Kandiyero charged with attempted unlawful entry.
The complainant in this matter is the Judicial Service Commission represented by Kelvin Mataramvura, 33 a provincial security officer appointed through a letter of resolution.
The State, through prosecutor Takudzwa Chitenderu, alleges that on January 15, 2024, at around 1650 hours, Brian Saitenga, who was at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts saw Chapauka trying to open different offices on the 4th floor where the chambers of Magistrates are located.
He closely monitored Chapauka and informed Mataramvura to come on the other side while he was following him.
It is alleged that Mataramvura and Saitenga apprehended Chapauka while trying to open office 465, the human resources office.
When he was asked why he was there, Chapauka failed to give a reasonable explanation and was handed over to the police.
“Your worship, l was confused and drunk at the same time. I have no ideas as to what l was doing.
“I sell sweets along Kaguvi Street. What troubled me was how l had arrived here at the courts.
“I seek forgiveness with court,” he said.
The State said it was prudent to set an example to the public for them to understand the consequences associated with crime.
“There is need to send a message to the public that crime does not pay.
“He targeted the court officials’ offices, it is the State’s prayer for him to be given a deterrent sentence.”
Chapauka, who remained in custody, is set to be sentenced today at 8:30am.
