After 19 years of gracing the Zimbabwean football scene with his acrobatic saves and unwavering leadership, Petros “Budro 1” Mhari has announced his retirement from professional football. In a heartfelt statement, Mhari reflects on his journey from a wide-eyed kid to a national legend, expressing gratitude to coaches, teammates, fans, and family who shaped his remarkable career.

Mhari’s journey began in 2004, a young boy chasing his childhood dream. Years of dedication and perseverance saw him rise through the ranks at Shangani Mine FC, Hwange FC, and finally, his home for the past decade, FC Platinum. With the Zvishavane-based club, Mhari lifted three consecutive Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League titles, etching his name in the club’s illustrious history.

But Mhari’s impact transcends titles and trophies. He donned the coveted green and gold jersey of the Zimbabwe national team with immense pride, making his debut against South Africa in 2021. Though his international career was brief, the opportunity to represent his nation on the global stage remains a cherished memory.

Mhari’s statement is woven with gratitude. He thanks the “Gaffer of note”, Sir Norman Mapeza, for recognising his talent and bestowing upon him the captain’s armband for nine seasons. He acknowledges the unwavering support of the FC Platinum Green Army, with whom he shared countless joyous victories.

Most importantly, Mhari expresses his deepest love and appreciation for his family, the bedrock of his success. He credits his mother, family, and the mother of his children, Lizzy, for being his constant pillars of strength throughout his journey.

Mhari’s retirement isn’t just the end of an era; it's a testament to the power of hard work, resilience, and unwavering passion. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence, inspiring a generation of young Zimbabwean footballers to dream big and strive for greatness.

Though the gloves are officially hung, “Budro 1” will forever be remembered as a legend of the game. His story is one of determination, dedication, and above all, love for the beautiful game. As he steps off the stage, a new chapter awaits, one filled with the promise of guiding and mentoring future generations of footballing stars.
