A man who allegedly stole a rifle together with his accomplices after assaulting the owner, who is a security guard, has been denied bail.

Peter Matumeni, 29, appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa, at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged robbery.

He will appear in court on February 29 for his routine remand.

The State alleges that on March 15, 2023, at around 0345 hours, Matumeni and his accomplices, Tellmore Brandy, Persuade Chari and Farirai Brandy armed themselves with iron bars and stones and went to rob the complainant.

It is alleged that they approached the security guards, Elvis Bvumbwe and Herbert Mutero, who were deployed on duty armed with a 303 rifle with a magazine of five rounds of ammunition.

Matumeni and his accomplices allegedly manhandled Bvumbwe and took his 303 rifle.

The State alleges that Matumeni struck Mutero with an iron bar and he fell down, sustaining a cut on the head.

The accused persons disappeared into the darkness, leaving the complainants in the guardroom.

Mutero was ferried to Parktown Clinic where he was treated.

The value of the property was US$500.
