Bikita East (Zanu PF) Member of Parliament, Energy Mutodi, wants Parliament to bar former Citizens Coalition for Change leader, Nelson Chamisa, from contesting future presidential elections through the amendment of Section 91 of the Constitution.

This comes as the country has witnessed disputed elections ever since the formation of the MDC in 1999, owing to allegations of electoral fraud, among other factors.

The motion by Mutodi draws from allegations made by two-time losing presidential contestant, Nelson Chamisa, of electoral fraud through rigging, intimidation and an uneven playing field, claiming that he won both elections against the incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In his proposal, Mutodi says that all other qualifications provided for in Section 91 of the constitution have been followed and implemented successfully, although the case of disputes over election results is recurrent and needs to be resolved.

“Madam Speaker, I wish to urge this House to make further qualifications which will ensure that our elections are not marred by persistent disputes every time they are held,” Mutodi said.

“I wish to urge this House to add an amendment to the effect that presidential candidates in the past elections who make unfounded allegations of electoral fraud be barred from nomination as candidates in future elections,” Mutodi added.
