An email that claimed bomb threat at Zimbabwean airports is being investigated following President Emmerson Mnangagwa's aborted Victoria Falls International Airport landing. The president who was slotted to speak at an event instead flew back to Harare.
“This morning Zimbabwe Airport Authorities were made aware of an e-mail sent through fastjet Airline by one John Doe, claiming ‘credible bomb/firearm threat’ targeting Zimbabwean airports,” said Charamba, adding that the country’s security systems are now on heightened alert," said Deputy Chief Secretary-Presidential Communications, George Charamba in a press release.
Charamba said the source and its credibility is also being investigated.
“While our country is peaceful, and all our ports of entry are well-secured, such alerts of possible terrorist attacks are taken and treated very seriously, as nothing should be left to chance. The nation is urged to remain calm while investigations are underway, the results of which will be made public by relevant arms of Government once investigations are concluded. His Excellency, he President, Dr ED Mnangagwa, who his morning was slotted to address a meeting in the prime resort City of Victoria Falls, has had to suspend his trip to allow for investigations, which are already underway,” said Charamba.
In June 2018, Mnangagwa survived a blast at a Zanu PF rally at White City Stadium in Bulawayo, in an attack which injured 42, including Vice President Kembo Mohadi.
Mnangagwa was walking off the stage when he grenade detonated. The perpetrators of that particular attack are still to be identified, over five years down the line.
