Dynamos are set to embark on their tenth consecutive season without a league title, facing a challenging start against Highlanders this weekend. The team is grappling with internal divisions following the dismissal of vice chairman Vincent Chawonza, further hindering their title aspirations.
The Harare giants, nicknamed “DeMbare”, suffered a disappointing loss to Ngezi Platinum Stars in the Castle Challenge Cup just two weeks ago. Their primary goal this season is to avoid becoming the first team in club history to go over a decade without a league title.
This lack of success is reminiscent of the period between 1997 and 2007, when Dynamos endured a similar ten-year drought. They eventually broke the streak under coach David Mandigora in 2007, reaching the CAF Champions League semi-finals the following year.
However, Dynamos haven’t lifted the trophy since 2014, when Kalisto Pasuwa secured the title for the fourth consecutive year. Pasuwa’s subsequent dismissal, along with the removal of chairman Kenni Mubaiwa during that successful period, fuelled a pattern of instability within the club.
The recent sacking of Chawonza, seen by many as a figure bringing professionalism to the organisation, has further exacerbated the existing chaos. Sources claim this decision has created significant rifts within the team, attributing the recent poor performance to this internal division.
Players’ morale is reportedly low, with concerns extending to the club’s sponsors who may be impacted by the negativity surrounding the team. The current atmosphere of uncertainty is a cause for concern, especially heading into the crucial opening match against rivals Highlanders. A potential heavy defeat could further amplify the existing challenges within Dynamos.
