Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram has taken to rival platform X, to communicate after a crash resulting in a large number of users suddenly being locked out of their accounts.
"We're aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now," Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a post on X.
A number of affected Zimbabweans have reported thinking that their Facebook accounts have been hacked.
Others have started circulating conspiracy rumours around a local clampdown on Facebook.
Users from across the world have reported the crash which according to tracking site downdetector.com started around 10:00 am ET, (17:00hrs CAT) with more than 300,000 reports of outages for Facebook and about 40,000 reports for Instagram.
The number of affected users is likely to be much higher as many will not likely report.
Meta also owns popular messaging platform WhatsApp and there are reports that the service could also be affected with about 200 reports recorded.
