President Emmerson Mnangagwa has set April 27 as the date for by-election for the National Assembly seats for Harare East and Mount Pleasant constituencies, which were left vacant through the resignation of their respective elected legislators.

Through the notification of vacancies in Parliament by the Speaker of the House, the President has declared a new election that has seen March 26 proclaimed as the nomination court date.

The proclamation of the dates for sitting of the nomination court and election day by the President, follow the resignation on Fadzayi Mahere on February 20 and Allan Rusty Markham of Mount Pleasant and Harare East constituencies respectively.

The two elected legislators resigned in solidarity with former party leader Nelson Chamisa, who left the Citizens Coalition for Change party late January.

“Now therefore, under and by virtue of the power vested in the President as afore said, I do, by this proclamation order new elections for the constituencies of Harare East and Mount Pleasant, and fix Tuesday the 26th of March, 2024, as the date on which the nomination court shall sit,” the proclamation reads in part.

“Fix Saturday the 27th of April, 2024, as the day on which a poll shall be taken if the poll becomes necessary in terms of section 46(17)(c) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13],” the proclamation further reads.
