The ruling Zanu PF has commended its supporters and various stakeholders for conducting a peaceful primary election on Saturday that chose party representatives for the by-elections.
National Assembly by-elections are due in Mount Pleasant and Harare East constituencies.
The primary election saw former Chitungwiza Acting Mayor, Kiven Mutimbanyoka and George Mashavave claim victory as they push closer Parliament, representing Harare East and Mt Pleasant constituencies respectively.
The Citizens Coalition for Change has shied away from the contest.
On the sidelines of the primary election in Mount Pleasant, Zanu PF Secretary for information and publicity, Christopher Mutsvangwa said that the voting process and participation was peaceful and fair, adding that a cordial atmosphere prevailed even after the announcement of the winners.
“The voters have been here since morning, patiently going through the processes, and there are many of them who have been coming through the processes of making sure that there is a fair and open election.
“And once there is a winner, you can see by the cordial atmosphere, the friendly atmosphere among the voters, they will all bend around who is the winner, to make sure that the Zanu PF candidate wins come by-elections,” Mutsvangwa said.
Zanu PF national commissar, Mike Bimha also noted at a press conference the same sentiments, applauding the supporters for a peaceful engagement, adding that the process is exemplary from the ruling party, while also giving notice to the victors on preparations for the nomination court.
“Primary elections were conducted peacefully and credibly in both constituencies.
“Next steps: Winning candidates must prepare their nomination papers for the upcoming nomination court on March 26, 2024.
“The party extends gratitude to the Presidium and all stakeholders for their exemplary conduct, highlighting Zanu PF's democratic nature. A special thanks to all members for their participation in internal democratic processes,” Bimha said.
