Nestled in the south-western periphery of Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, lies Highfield, a vibrant and historic township. Established in the 1930s as a segregated space for the black majority during colonial rule, Highfield has borne witness to the struggles and triumphs of the nation.

Highfield’s story starts with its designation as a “native township” during colonial Rhodesia. Its purpose was to provide cheap labour for the nearby industrial areas of Southerton and Workington. Despite its limitations, Highfield fostered a strong sense of community and became a breeding ground for Zimbabwe’s fight for independence.

The suburb is deeply intertwined with Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. Robert Mugabe, the nation’s founding father, and Joshua Nkomo, a prominent nationalist leader, both resided in Highfield. The Zimbabwe African National Union, a political party central to the independence movement, was formed in Highfield.

The neighbourhood's iconic Zimbabwe Grounds hosted the party’s first rally, marking a significant chapter in the country’s history.

Thereafter, the same venue also hosted the formation of the MDC Alliance and later the famous rally that pushed the ouster of the late Mugabe post-coup on November 18, 2017.

Highfield boasts a rich social fabric, evident in its numerous churches, representing diverse denominations, and its bustling commercial centre, Machipisa. However, the suburb grapples with poverty and unemployment, a legacy of its segregated past. Despite these challenges, residents exhibit remarkable resilience, finding solace in their community and cultural heritage.

Highfield’s narrative is one of perseverance. While the road ahead is paved with challenges, the suburb’s spirit of resilience and its potential for development offer a glimmer of hope. Through continued investment in education, infrastructure, and community initiatives, Highfield can embrace a brighter future, one that honours its past and empowers its residents.

Highfield’s story is more than just a historical account; it’s a testament to the enduring human spirit. It’s a story of struggle, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of a better tomorrow. As Highfield evolves, it carries the hopes and aspirations of its people, forever etched in the fabric of Zimbabwe’s national narrative.
