“I love Zimbabwe”: China's Medical 20th Medical Team Zimbabwe leaves a legacy of wellness and friendship

Over the past 39 years, China has sent 20 medical teams to Zimbabwe, comprising 199 personnel in total. Additionally, there have been 9 short-term medical teams, totaling 78 personnel. During these 39 years, the cumulative number of patients treated has exceeded 70,000.

The 20th China Medical Team in Zimbabwe, which arrived on March 2, 2023 is set to return to China soon after a mission well accomplished.

Comprising 11 members with expertise spanning various medical specialties including respiratory and critical care medicine, traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture and massage therapy, general internal medicine, general surgery, urology, pediatrics, orthopedics, radiology, and anesthesiology, this team has made significant contributions to Zimbabwe’s wellbeing during their year of service.

One of the key accomplishments has been in medical diagnosis and treatment services. From their base at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and during outreaches across the country, the 20th team provided care to a total of 12,504 patients, including 9,433 outpatient cases.

A notable percentage of patients treated received traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture. Additionally, the team conducted 3,071 inpatient admissions, performed 490 surgeries, carried out 31 critical care rescues, administered 509 anesthesia procedures, and conducted 1,384 X-ray examinations. They also provided medical services to senior officials in Zimbabwe.

The team focused on training and teaching, conducting 286 teaching sessions with a total of 1,162 participants, furthering medical education and expertise in the region.

In their commitment to community outreach, the 20th China Medical Team organized 14 free clinics across various locations including local Chinese-funded enterprises, communities, schools, orphanages, and the 113th Zimbabwe Agricultural Show, covering all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe.

These clinics not only provided medical treatment and medication for infectious diseases, common illnesses, and prevalent diseases but also imparted traditional Chinese health exercises and conducted "First Witness" training, benefiting a total of 6,678 individuals.

At events such as the Agricultural Show and Chinese enterprise job fairs, the team showcased Chinese medical culture through booths, herbal tea distribution, and specialized lectures, garnering interest and participation from over 2,000 Zimbabwean officials and residents.

Furthermore, the 20th China Medical Team actively promoted China-Zimbabwe co-operation, facilitating training and exchange programs, donation of medical supplies, and the construction of medical platforms.

They also spearheaded the promotion of Traditional Chinese Medicine culture, facilitating the registration of Chinese herbal medicines, constructing exhibition halls and emergency shelters, and hosting visits to the TCM Centre, engaging a total of 198 visitors.

The 21st China Medical Team scheduled to arrive on March 7, 2024, will carry on the legacy left by the 20th China Medical Team with specialties covering respiratory medicine, emergency medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and more.

Anticipation is high for their continued dedication to enhancing healthcare in Zimbabwe. The collaboration between China and Zimbabwe in the field of healthcare promises mutual benefits and a brighter future for both nations.

 

20th China Medical Team’s year of excellent service

Dr. Cai Yi: we express our sincere gratitude to Zimbabwe for the enduring friendship between our nations.  Thank you for your continued support and camaraderie.

 

Dr. Liu Yongping: it is indeed a tremendous honour to be present in the stunning country of Zimbabwe, where every moment has bestowed upon me cherished memories and invaluable experiences.  I earnestly anticipate further opportunities for collaboration and dialogue in enhancing perioperative patient anesthesia management in the future.  In closing, I extend my heartfelt wish for the eternal prosperity of the friendship between China and Zimbabwe.


Dr.Ouyang Bin: it is a tremendous honour to have the opportunity to visit the beautiful country of Zimbabwe and to meet such a wonderful group of friends who share similar goals. I am hopeful that we can strengthen our cooperation in the future and collaborate to provide medical care to even more Zimbabwean patients. The friendship between China and Zimbabwe is enduring and will continue to thrive in the years to come. Dr. Zeng Jun: the radiant smiles of the children brighten my day, akin to sunshine streaming into my life! As a doctor serving on the medical team, I feel a deep sense of pride.

Dr. Hu Yang: I will always cherish the year I spent working and living in Zimbabwe. My heartfelt wishes go out to all the children of Zimbabwe for their health, safety, and flourishing growth.

Dr. Zhu Jun: we share experiences and foster friendships, united by our common goal of saving patients' lives.

 

 


Dr. Li Conggang: the people of China and Zimbabwe have long been interconnected, sharing a common destiny, working collaboratively, extending mutual assistance, and journeying forward together side by side.

Dr. Wang Zhiming and Dr. Hu Sha: over the past year, Dr. Wang Zhiming and Dr. Hu Sha have provided treatment to over 9,000 patients at the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Center. We take pride in the fact that TCM acupuncture has been instrumental in aiding the Zimbabwean people on their path to healing. We express our gratitude to the people of Zimbabwe for their trust and recognition of the TCM center.

Dr. Zhang Yao: the more you experience and appreciate the goodness of life, the more there is to be lived. I love Zimbabwe.
