The PWDs Access Half Marathon in Triangle yesterday was a huge success as the event was oversubscribed, with athletes from all walks of life taking part, organisers of the event have said.
Hosted by the Research Hub for Children with Disability, the Half Marathon attracted athletes from ZRP Chiredzi - who fielded 20 of their runners - some from Pick N Pay, Tangaat Hullet, Triangle Country Club, Nyaradzo Group among many other corporates.
REHUB CD Coordinator, Admire Munava said every runner ended up with a medal, thus they did not worry who was winning.
“We did not particularly worry about who is winning since every runner ended up getting a medal.
“Persons with disabilities from Chiredzi South also attended and participated in the run. Emphasis from the speeches given at the event was on access to essential services like healthcare and education as a right as stated by the Zimbabwe Constitution.
“If resources permit, the PWDs Access Half Marathon will become an annual event in Chiredzi to continue to sportify disability,” he said.
Munava also singled out the contribution made by Schweppes towards the Half Marathon, which is aimed at raising awareness of PWDs’ accessibility access to essential services like healthcare and education.
“I need to acknowledge and thank Schweppes- they donated 300 bottles of minute maid and 300 bottled water towards the event,” he said.
He added that REHUBCD will host the second Paralympics at Old Boli in Chiredzi South.
“On March 27, REHUBCD will be at Old Boli in Chiredzi South for the Paralympics where various sporting activities and games will be played by PWDs, competing for trophies and medals as well. There are some roving trophies that the teams will be battling to win,” Munava said.
