The Harare Volleyball Open Tournament (HVA Open) served as a thrilling preview of what Zimbabwean volleyball fans can expect at the upcoming African Volleyball Confederation Africa Club Championships in Egypt. Continental Volleyball Club Championship contenders, the Non-Academic Bachelors Association and University of Zimbabwe Wolves (UZ Wolves), stole the show with a captivating finals match in both the men’s and women’s categories.

NABA, comprised largely of former UZ players, emerged victorious in the men’s division, defeating their old teammates in a nail-biting final. This win solidified NABA’s dominance, following their silver medal performance at the Zone Six Senior Club Championships in Maseru, Lesotho, which secured their qualification for the continental competition. UZ Wolves, despite falling short in the finals, also booked their ticket to Egypt after placing fourth at the Zone Six Championships.

NABA is currently fundraising US$63 000 to cover expenses for the African Club Championships, including airfare, accommodation, local transportation, tournament fees, player allowances, and medical aid.

In the women’s division, UZ Wolves emerged triumphant, dethroning the previous champions, Support Unit. Harare City Women secured the third-place spot, showcasing their continued strength.

“The season opener went on as planned,” expressed HVA chairperson Priestledge Nhamburo, commending the teams’ performances. “We were impressed by the level of preparedness of the teams. They had prepared well during the off-season. We all managed to take notes of areas we need to work on.” Nhamburo also projected an exciting upcoming season, highlighting: “To the teams, I’m confident next two weeks they will work on these areas as they prepare for the Zim Open. We are now looking forward to an epic 2024 Premier League season as no team will be deemed the dominants.”

With the HVA Open setting the stage, both NABA and UZ Wolves look poised for a remarkable showing at the AVC Africa Club Championships. Volleyball enthusiasts across Zimbabwe will be eagerly anticipating their performances as they represent the nation on the continental stage.

The HVA will also hold its Annual General Meeting on April 13 in Harare, gearing up for an active and promising volleyball season.
