Police have arrested Tynwald School bus driver Chamunorwa Machimbidzofa after he had failed to cooperate with police in Mutare, it has emerged.
National Spokesperson for the force, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, told Zim Now that prior to the arrest, ZRP had been urging Chamunorwa to go for statements in Mutare where the accident that killed six pupils happened, but he did not comply.
“We were left with no option but to arrest him as he was not liaising with the Mutare Police,” said Ass Comm Nyathi.
According to the Commissioner, Chamunorwa was arrested in Harare and he has since been transferred to Mutare.
Three weeks ago, Chamunorwa failed to negotiate a sharp curve in Juliasdale, Nyanga resulting in the road crash that killed students.
As the driver of a public service vehicle, Chamunorwa should have produced a driver’s license, a valid defensive driving certificate and a valid medical certificate.
Under Zimbabwean law, if one is involved in a traffic accident attended by the police, and they do not have required documentation with them at the scene, they must submit such papers to the nearest police station within a period of seven days.
Recently, the driver’s lawyer informed police that he needed to rest before he could submit the required documents.
