South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress has confirmed the resignation of their former National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.

This follows Mapisa-Nqakula’s resignation letter on April 3, 2024, arguing that she was protecting the reputation of the ANC.

Nqakula is accused of accepting bribes amounting to about US$135 000 from a defence contractor during her three years as Defence minister.

She allegedly received the payments between December 2016 and July 2019.

In a statement, the ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said it comes amid corruption accusations laid against her.

“In her resignation, Comrade Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula highlighted her intention to protect the reputation of our organisation, the African National Congress, after dedicating more than 30 years of service,” reads the statement.

“We value commitment to maintain the image of our organisation, as it reflects our principles of organisational renewal that promote proactive responsibility-taking among members rather than waiting for instructions to step aside.

“The resignation letter has been officially received by the Office of the Secretary General of the ANC, Fikile Mbalula,” reads the statement.
