A solar and borehole drilling scheme in Neta area of Mberengwa is set to alleviate water challenges for hundreds of people, including the elderly in the area.
The Neta community in Mberengwa will soon heave a sigh of relief on the completion of the borehole drilling scheme implemented through the Senior Citizens for Economic Development affiliate.
The initiative will also expand to the provision of solar equipment to the elderly.
“We are very grateful that our affiliate has taken some huge steps that will help us, the elderly to play a key role in the developmental matrix of this country,” said one of the beneficiaries.
Another one added: “This is the first time to witness such a great initiative here in Mberengwa. We are very grateful to the government and its development partners for remembering our roles as elderly people.”
Senior Citizens 4ED national chairperson, Tsvaki Muturiki explained the importance of including the elderly in the country’s development matrix.
“The aim of the Senior Citizens 4ED is to improve the lives of the Senior Citizens in terms of their economic development, health, and sanitation. We are therefore conducting various programmes among them township tourism, borehole drilling and Solar equipment,” he said.
Zanu PF commissariat department director, Dr Davison Gomo noted the private sector has a crucial role in supporting communities.
“We want the local leadership here to play a crucial role in uplifting the standards of living for our senior citizens by creating development committees and making sure that these people are included in the development activities. We have mines and companies around Mberengwa implore them to play a part in uplifting the standards of living for our elders,” he said.
According to the Senior Citizens for Economic Development, the initiative will be rolled out across the country as they target to improve livelihoods.
