Two suspects nabbed over armed robbery

Two men, who are suspected to have been part of a gang that was committing robberies in and around Harare, have been nabbed.

Timothy Marembo, 32, and Blessing Kachidza, 47, both of Aspindale, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing theft and armed robbery charges.

They will appear in court on April 26.

The State alleges that on March 22, at around 1245 hours, the accused persons and their accomplice, Tawanda Machingauta, who is at Sally Mugabe Hospital and others, who are still at large, went to a parked white Toyota GD6 Hilux single cab outside VID Belvedere, Harare yard.

They allegedly damaged the driver’s door locking system and opened it.

The court heard that they stole a brown laptop bag, wallet, three plastic bags with US$38 900 and a CZ pistol serial number G222113 with two magazines loaded with 14 rounds, which was in a red small bag under the driver’s seat.

On the same day, at around 1800 hours, the accused dropped a brown bag containing documents and a firearm at house number 468 Cedrella Avenue, Lochinvar, Harare belonging to one Manyara Guri and went away.

The court also heard that on April 13, at around 0100 hours the accused and their accomplice, Machingauta approached the complainant, who was on guard duty at Amanat Hardware number 8 Westbrough, Mt Pleasant, Harare armed with pistols and manhandled him together with his workmate.

They took their whistles, paper sprays and button sticks.

It is alleged that they left three of them guarding the complainant and the other three went on to open the main gate to give the last three accused access to the premises.

They went on top of the roof where they removed roof tiles and entered the hardware shop.

The court was informed that the searched the whole shop for money but failed to find any.

During the search they triggered the alarm and one of them cut off the its cable to switch it off.

They allegedly stole a bolt cutter and 5 x pairs of gloves among other things and went away.

The State alleges that on April 17, the police made a follow-up, leading to their arrest at Glen Norah A Shopping Centre, Harare.

The accused were interviewed and admitted to the offences.

As a result, property worth US$41 432.45 was stolen and only US$2 500 worth was recovered.
