Zimbabwe's rugby governing body, the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU), is facing a fierce backlash from fans for failing to compensate the Junior Sables, the national under-20 team, who are currently competing in the Barthes Trophy which Zimbabwe is hosting.
ZRU president Aaron Jani revealed at a press conference that the players would not receive allowances, claiming the funds were redirected towards better training facilities likened to "a five-star hotel." Jani believes this fosters a professional environment beneficial for their future careers.
However, fans are unconvinced. Many, like Forget Maringa, slammed the ZRU's lack of professionalism, arguing that "failing to support these upcoming youngsters" hinders the nation's aspirations of reaching the Rugby World Cup. Blessing Chirara echoed this sentiment, criticizing the ZRU's misplaced priorities and questioning why motivating young talent isn't considered important.
These concerns align with those of Tendai Mtawarira, the 2019 World Cup winner, who last month highlighted Zimbabwe's struggle to retain talent due to inadequate player welfare. Mtawarira believes the nation has the potential to qualify for the World Cup with proper development.
The Junior Sables are Zimbabwe's most successful national rugby team, boasting two consecutive Barthes Trophy victories. They hold the potential to achieve a historic three-peat on home soil, but their motivation might be dampened by the ZRU's financial decision.
