The Zimbabwean government has approved a Public Private Partnership project between Zesa Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd and a company called Management Services for the establishment of a US$25 million transmission cable manufacturing plant in Harare.
This initiative was presented by Honourable Mthuli Ncube, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion in Cabinet on Tuesday.
The project is said to be in support of promoting investment and ensuring access to reliable and affordable energy in the country.
The joint venture project is expected to enable the transfer of technology and expertise to Zesa staff.
The manufactured cables will be used for the revitalisation and expansion of transmission and distribution networks, ultimately meeting national targets for increased access to electricity.
“The nation is advised that in support of the initiative to promote investments and access to reliable and affordable energy. Cabinet approved Zesa Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd. to conclude an agreement framework with Management Services Company establishment of a US$25 million transmission cable manufacturing plant in Harare,” Information Minister Jenfan Muswere told journalists during a post-Cabinet briefing in Harare.
“The joint venture project will enable the transfer of technology and expertise to Zesa Enterprises and its staff. The project will ensure availability of power cables for the revitalisation and expansion of transmission and distribution networks to meet national targets for increased access to electricity.
The project is also expected to benefit players in the mining and cable manufacturing value chains and downstream industries. Local copper mines will have a ready market for their produce and there will be significant employment opportunities created for Zimbabweans.
The Minister said increased economic activity is expected to contribute to the country’s gross domestic product through local, regional and continental sales of cables and related products, including exports.
