Police have taken into custody the father of a pregnant nine year old girl from Chief Gampu’s area in Tsholotsho.
“The father of the nine-year-old who is pregnant at the United Bulawayo Hospitals is in police custody assisting in the investigations of this issue.
“As police, we are engrossed with this issue so that we get evidence on the perpetrator of the alleged rape,” national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.
The nine year old has refused to name the person responsible for her pregnancy which is now at eight months.
Statistics show that in over 90 percent of child rape cases, the perpetrator is someone within the minor’s social circle including relatives and family friends.
Threats and psychological manipulation are normally used to intimidate the child into silence during and after abuse.
The pregnancy came to light when the girl complained of stomach pains and was taken to Tsholotsho District Hospital.
Police say experts in child sensitive probing are working with the girl who is admitted at United Bulawayo Hospital.
The family have consulted spiritual seers in a futile attempt to have the perpetrator revealed after the victim refused to name him.
They now say they will go for DNA testing with all males – including family and friends as well as any visitors- who were in the girl’s vicinity at the relevant time being treated as potential suspects.
