Nine suspected armed robbers got away with a tonne of gold ore and a rifle at Shangwe Mine in Chegutu on May 12, after attacking two security guards.
The robbers reportedly stormed the mine around 2000hrs, attacking two security guards on duty before proceeding to a site where gold ore was kept. They are alleged to have commanded the security guards to lie down on the floor, stealing a rifle from one the guards, before getting away with it together with the gold loot.
“…at Shangwe Mine, Chegutu, nine male suspects attacked two security guards who were on duty at around 2000 hours on 12/05/24. The two security guards were assaulted and ordered to lie down. Seven of the suspects proceeded to the site were gold ore was kept leaving two guarding the complainants.
“They stole gold ore amounting to about one tonne. The suspects left with the gold loot and a lee field rifle, which they took from one of the guards.
“Police are appealing for information that can assist to account for the suspects. Anyone with the information can contact any nearest police station,” read the statement.
Meanwhile, in a similar incident, police in Selous are investigating a robbery incident, involving a 23-year-old male victim, Wesley Bathjies, who was robbed of his Honda Fit vehicle, cellphone and cash by two suspects.
The complainant, who was hired by the robbers pretending to be real travellers, was later dumped in a bush, with the suspected robbers driving off towards the Harare-Bulawayo Road.
“Police ZRP Selous is investigating a robbery case in which two suspects pretending to be genuine travellers robbed a Honda Fit they were offered a lift on 13/05/24 at around 1640 hours. The complainant Wesley Batgjies, aged 23, met the two at the 10km Peg along Chegutu-Gadzema road.
“The two hired him to C-section Pfupajena to collect their blankets. On their way and at ZMDC Gadzema, the one who was seated in the passenger’s seat ordered the complainant to stop the vehicle. The complainant stopped and immediately they threatened him with a knife. They shoved him off the driver’s seat and he was bundled in the back seat. They tied his hands with shoe laces.
“They searched his pockets and took a KGTEL cellphone and cash amounting to US$50. The vehicle was driven towards Selous. The complainant was later dumped in a bush along Selous-Ngezi road and the suspects drove off towards Harare-Bulawayo road,” police said.
