Felistus Kwangwa is more than just the captain of the Zimbabwe National Netball Team – she’s a role model, a leader, and an advocate for her sport. This 29-year-old powerhouse is shattering stereotypes, proving that excellence can be achieved on and off the court.
Born into a small family, Kwangwa’s talent for netball was nurtured by her teachers who recognized her potential. This early guidance propelled her through various levels of competition, ultimately landing her a spot on the national team. Her dedication didn't stop there. Kwangwa pursued a degree in Economic History while simultaneously honing her netball skills, a testament to her remarkable versatility.
Kwangwa's journey is paved with achievements. She played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe's historic eighth-place finish at the 2019 Netball World Cup, serving as vice-captain at the time. Following her exceptional leadership, she was appointed captain in 2019, becoming a beacon of inspiration for the "Zimbabwe Gems."
However, Kwangwa is not afraid to address the challenges her team faces. The lack of corporate sponsorship is a major hurdle, forcing the Gems to share limited government resources with other sports. Kwangwa calls for increased corporate involvement, not just for netball but for all Zimbabwean sports, mirroring the competitive sponsorship culture seen in other countries.
Kwangwa is a strong advocate for athlete well-being. She champions the need for maternity return programs, a crucial support system for female athletes juggling motherhood and their careers.
As a role model, Kwangwa offers invaluable advice to aspiring athletes. She emphasizes the importance of hard work, discipline, and unwavering commitment. Balancing academics and sports is key, but for those excelling in one area, unwavering focus and resilience are essential. Her inspiration comes from none other than tennis legend Serena Williams, a testament to Kwangwa's own pursuit of excellence.
