Mnangagwa greenlights starlink for Zimbabwe, bringing high-speed internet

Philemon Jambaya

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced the approval of Starlink internet services in Zimbabwe, a move long-awaited by citizens seeking faster and wider internet access.

The announcement, made via Mnangagwa's official X (formerly Twitter) handle, paves the way for "advanced internet and related digital processing services" across the country. Starlink, developed by SpaceX, utilizes satellites to deliver high-speed internet even in remote areas.

IMC Communications will serve as Starlink's exclusive local partner. While details on ownership remain unclear, reports suggest a young, politically connected businessman might be involved.

This news comes after the  arrest of local businessman Neville Mutsvangwa for allegedly possessing Starlink routers imported from Zambia.  Mutsvangwa's case remains ongoing, as the new regulations cannot be applied retroactively.

Prior to the announcement, government ministers avoided clear stances on Starlink, leading to public frustration. Analysts believe the decision bypassed the ICT and Information ministries, with many citizens applauding Mnangagwa's proactive approach.
