The Citizens' Coalition for Change (CCC) faction led by Jameson Timba announced a 16-member shadow cabinet on Friday. This comes amidst ongoing internal struggles within the CCC, with Timba's faction believed to be loyal to former leader Nelson Chamisa.
The announcement of the shadow cabinet follows accusations by the Timba faction that certain party officials have been collaborating with the ruling ZANU PF party. The newly formed cabinet is comprised primarily of legislators who survived the recent Tshabangu recalls.
The shadow cabinet will play a critical role in holding the government accountable. Shadow ministers will be tasked with scrutinizing government policies and actions, ensuring transparency and identifying areas for improvement. Additionally, they will develop alternative policies on various issues, aiming to position the CCC as a viable alternative to the current administration.
Public engagement is another key focus for the shadow cabinet. Members will serve as spokespersons for the Timba-led CCC, actively promoting the party's values, ideas, and policy stances through public appearances and media engagement.
"Their key responsibilities include holding the government accountable...developing and promoting alternative policies and ideas...serving as spokespeople for the party," the CCC stated on their X platform.
The shadow cabinet includes notable figures such as Corban Madzivanyika (shadow Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion), Agency Gumbo (shadow Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs), Gladys Hlatywayo (shadow Minister of ICT and Courier Services), Darlington Chigumbu (shadow Minister of Media and Broadcasting Services), Takudzwa Ngadziore (shadow Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Recreation), and Joana Mamombe (shadow Minister of Environment, Climate, Tourism, Hospitality and Wild Life Management).
The formation of a shadow cabinet by the Timba-led CCC faction is a significant development. It suggests a strategic shift towards a more robust and oppositional role, potentially undermining the legitimacy of any rumored GNU between the rival Welshman Ncube-led CCC faction and ZANU PF
However, deep internal divisions within the CCC pose a significant challenge to its ability to effectively challenge ZANU PF.
