Ex employees at former late President Robert Mugabe's Blue Roof residence have been taken to court accused of stealing property worth US$500 000.
Allen Chinamonya, 42, of Ruwa, Danmore Chinamonya, 35, of Hatcliffe, Samson Karonga, 46, of Borrowdale, and Brighton Bunganirwa, 32, of Whitehouse, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts.
They will appear in court on May 28, for bail application.
The State alleges that Allen was employed at the Blue Roof residence as a groundsman and later, as a driver, from 2004 to 2022.
Danmore was employed as a groundsman and later as a driver from 2022, Karonga is still an electrician at Blue Roof and Bunganirwa, who was convicted of theft after stealing a chest of drawer, was once employed at the Blue Roof as a gardener.
It is alleged that in 2018, the former First Lady Grace Mugabe brought 11 goods containers at her residence loaded with various household items which were removed from the Zimbabwe House after Mugabe was booted out of the presidency.
The State alleges that from 2018 to May 2024, the accused broke the padlocks that were on the container doors and stole various household items including television sets, clothes, cutlery and bathing towels.
On May 22, Mugabe went to the containers wanting to select some artefacts belonging to her late husband which she wanted to donate to the African Liberation Museum.
That is when she discovered that some of the locks on the goods containers had been broken and some property was missing from the containers.
Mugabe through a Superintendent Kennedy Fero, reported the theft at Borrowdale Police Station on May 25.
On the same date, CID detectives picked the accused and interviewed them before making searches at Allen’s residence where they recovered some items.
Other items were recovered from Danmore’s residence.
The recovered pieces worth US$2 000 were positively identified by the complainant
