A 30-year-old man from Sibhula Village under Chief Mathema in Gwanda was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the High court sitting at Bulawayo after he was found guilty of murder.
On August 20, 2023, at around 2300 hours, the accused person got home and found the now-deceased Happiness Ngwenya, his wife asleep in the bedroom with their two little children.
Ngwenya reportedly asked the accused person where he had been.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, an argument ensued between the two wherein the accused assaulted her with clinched fists and a knobkerrie on the knees and neck.
He also strangled her, resulting in her death. The accused person, who reported the matter to the police, stated that his wife had earlier on complained of chest problems, and when he got home, he had found her dead on the floor.
“The case was classified as a sudden death. The postmortem report, showed that the cause of the death was strangulation and mechanical asphyxia.
“The police interviewed the five-year-old child, who stated that she observed the accused person straggling the now-deceased.
“The accused person was apprehended on August 31, 2023, in Bulawayo, where he had been hiding at his sister’s house.
“During trial on May 30, 2024, the accused person claimed that he strangled the now-deceased because she grabbed his testicles during the altercation,” the NPA said.
He claimed that he strangled the now-deceased in self-defence.
The five-year-old, however, testified that the accused person was the aggressor, who strangled the now-deceased.
The child was found to be a credible witness and the accused person was convicted of murder and was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.
