Eight Years Later: Dynamos supporters keep flame of remembrance alive

The Dynamos Supporters Association, Harare chapter, held a somber yet significant ceremony at the club's offices. This annual event, steeped in both grief and compassion, has become a poignant tradition – a day to remember the nine supporters who tragically died in a road accident in 2016.

June 11th, 2016, forever etched in the hearts of Dynamos fans, marked the day a group of ardent supporters, fueled by their unwavering passion for their team, embarked on a fateful journey to Gweru for a match against Chapungu. Their journey was tragically cut short near the 173km peg close to Battlefield. This dark day continues to cast a long shadow, a stark reminder of the unwavering loyalty and dedication of these "fallen cadres," as they are fondly remembered.

For the past eight years, the Harare chapter has organized a commemorative football tournament to raise funds for a cause that transcends the beautiful game – supporting the families left behind. This year’s ceremony served as the culmination of those efforts, with the distribution of food hampers – a token of remembrance and a gesture of solidarity with those still grappling with the loss.

"This is a big day for us," declared Kudakwashe Machekera, chairman of the Harare chapter. His voice resonated with a somber respect as he spoke to this publication "It's a chance to honor our comrades who shared the Dembare spirit with us. They left a void, and they left behind loved ones. This is our way of remembering them, by ensuring their families have something on their tables." His words resonated with raw emotion, a testament to the enduring bond that unites supporters beyond the confines of the pitch.

Gratitude filled the air as beneficiaries expressed their appreciation. Mercy Muberekwa, one of those receiving a hamper, spoke on behalf of the families. "We are eternally grateful to Dynamos and the Dembare Nine group," she beamed, her voice trembling slightly. "For eight years, you haven't forgotten us. You've looked after our families, and that means the world to us."

Benevolent Vono, the association's secretary-general, took the opportunity to deliver a heartfelt plea. "Dynamos is more than just a football team," he proclaimed. "It's a family, and on June 11th, 2016, we lost a part of that family. Some perished, others were left forever changed. My plea extends to the entire footballing community – let's continue to show compassion, let's keep the memory of these fallen fans alive. Let June 11th be a day of remembrance, not just for Dynamos supporters, but for all those who lose loved ones in the pursuit of their footballing passion."
