Chegutu Municipality Town Clerk Mr Jacob Chikuruwo told journalists on a familiarisation tour organised by Media Institute of Southern Africa that provision of water and sanitation facilities was key component are key to the local authority’s regeneration plans.

“The situation here was not safe considering it being one of the oldest locations sanitation facilities were in a bad state people were using buckets as toilets as community toilets were also in bad shape, open defecation was now rampant," council Engineer Mr Ralf Kunda said.

In addition the municipality also put in communal taps at close intervals so that residents have easy access to potable water.

A resident, Mrs Matida Makadango, said the situation before council intervention was untenable.

“Surely to say those in the rural areas were better off than us. We had resorted to the bucket system which we would empty in unusable public toilets,” she said.

Mrs Makadango said it is key for council to spread the regeneration to all areas so that the whole area offers standard services.

"What council has done is commendable. Let them continue with the good works to other areas in need,” said Makadango.
