ED warns SADC protests plotters

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said security forces will crack down on any violence and protests before, during and after the SADC Summit to be held in August.

President Mnangagwa made the remarks during his address of the Central Committee in Harare yesterday.

This came agains reports of planned protests in Harare during the SADC summit.

Opposition leader Jameson Timba and others are currently in custody charged with participating in a gathering with the intent to promote violence, breaches of peace and disorderly conduct.

The group of +70 was arrested at a Harare house a few days ago in what they police have described as an unsanctioned political gathering.

Anti-government elements in Zimbabwe have been hyping up calls for mass protests during the SADC meeting as they say Mnangagwa did not win the August 2023 elections fairly.

Ongoing riots in Nairobi have also given wings to calls for similar unrest in Harare.

Security forces in Kenya have shot dead a number of protesters.

In his address, President Mnangagwa said that he is aware of elements within the nation that are planning to disrupt summit session through protests and acts of civil disorder.

He, warned the public against taking part in any such activity saying law enforcement will be on high alert.

“I am aware of certain rogue elements within the nation who are bent on peddling falsehoods and instigating acts of civil disorder, especially before during and after regional and world stage events.

“The Zanu-PF led government will not tolerate any form of destabilisation in our country to disturb our security peaceful and tranquil environment,” he said.

Zimbabwe is set to host the 44th SADC summit from August 17 to 18 this year, at which it will assume the Chairmanship of the SADC Organisation.
