Limpopo-born singer Makhadzi is celebrating her BET Award win, but the journey wasn't all glitz and glam. In a candid interview with MacG and Sol on Podcast and Chill, Makhadzi revealed the financial struggles she faced due to a hefty tax bill.
While fans lauded her "Viewers Choice: Best New International Act" win, Makhadzi confessed to still being entangled with the South African Revenue Services . The Sunday World reported her initial tax debt at a staggering R6.6 million, a figure that was thankfully reduced to R2.7 million with the help of a tax consultant.
Despite the negotiation, paying off the remaining amount has taken a toll. "Every penny I get monthly goes to SARS," Makhadzi shared, "to the point where I don't have any money left for myself."
Determined to attend the BET Awards, Makhadzi resorted to a loan from a "mashonisa" (loan shark) to cover travel expenses and maintain her superstar image. "They had to borrow money for me so I can fly business class because I have to be the superstar that I am," she explained.
