A joint operation by South African authorities last Friday resulted in the arrest of 208 undocumented immigrants, primarily from Zimbabwe (176) but also including Mozambicans and Indians. The raid, conducted in the Sekhukhune District of Limpopo Province, targeted suspected illegal activity.
According to Limpopo Province Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the operation aimed to "rid the area of illegal activities." The two-day operation, which began on July 18th in Leeuwfontein and surrounding farms, concluded on July 19th at around 11 am.
While the Zimbabwean and Mozambican nationals, both adults and minors, were swiftly deported to their home countries, the Indian nationals remain in custody pending deportation proceedings. All the arrested individuals face charges of violating South Africa's Immigration Act.
The raid comes amidst South Africa's intensified deportation efforts, particularly targeting Zimbabweans accused of taking jobs away from South Africans.
However, these deportations have drawn criticism from some farmers who argue that the loss of this labor force will negatively impact agricultural production. They point out that many South Africans are unwilling to take on these manual labor jobs despite limited educational opportunities.
