Shihan Wilfred Mashaya, the reigning Kobudo World Champion, clinched four gold medals and a silver medal at the International Martial Arts Corporation English Open Tournament held at the York Leisure Centre in England on Sunday.

Competing across five categories, Mashaya showcased exceptional prowess with various ancient Okinawan and Japanese weapons, including swords, nunchaku, tonfa, sai, and kama.

In an exclusive interview with Zim Now, Mashaya conveyed profound gratitude for his outstanding performance that proudly elevated the Zimbabwean flag.

Reflecting on his triumph, he remarked, "To represent our nation on foreign soil and secure medals holds great significance for me. It is a privilege for Zimbabwe, underscoring our ability to compete on a global stage.

"I am overjoyed to have achieved this for my beloved country and eagerly anticipate further opportunities to uphold our national pride."

Mashaya excelled in the Black Belt Traditional Weapon, Black Belt Freestyle Weapon, Black Belt Creative Weapons, and Mixed Weapon Category divisions, claiming gold medals in each.

His exceptional skills also earned him a silver medal in the Advanced Musical Weapons category.

His performance was a testament to his extensive martial arts background, boasting multiple black belts in disciplines such as Kyokushin, Bujinkan Ninjutsu, and Self-Defence.

The tournament convened elite martial artists from around the world, including England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Zimbabwe, India, Nepal, Morocco, and the USA.

Mashaya's triumph not only marked a significant milestone but also served as vital preparation for the impending martial arts World Championships scheduled for October in Germany.

Acknowledging his achievements, the IMAC organisers bestowed upon Mashaya the prestigious role of being the official representative of the Martial Arts Body in Zimbabwe, accompanied by a certificate of appointment.
