A former secretary of the Anglican Church Rebecca Savings Club has been sentenced to perform community service after being found guilty of stealing US$25,796 from the organization.

Barbra Matora, 39, of Warren Park D, was ordered to serve 420 hours of community service at Warren Park Primary School. The sentence followed her conviction on charges of theft of trust property.

Matora had initially been sentenced to 42 months imprisonment, but a portion of the sentence was suspended on condition that she repay the stolen funds and maintain good behavior.

The court heard that Matora, as the secretary and custodian of the savings club's funds, had unlawfully converted US$2,163 to her own use. Despite repeated demands from the club members, she failed to account for the missing money.

The theft came to light when the savings club members decided to distribute their accumulated funds. Matora's actions were exposed during a meeting in December 2023, when she was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the missing money.
