Zimbabwe Deploys Drones to Combat Quelea Bird Threat to Wheat Crops

The Zimbabwean government has intensified efforts to manage the threat of quelea birds to the country's wheat crop by deploying hi-tech drones for monitoring and control.

Shingirayi Nyamutukwa, Director of the Migratory Control Department, announced the deployment of nine drones specifically designed to monitor and control quelea bird populations.

"In addition to the drones, the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development has bolstered its human resources by recruiting 21 additional technicians and deploying five vehicle-mounted sprayers and thirty motorised back sprayers.

"The government has planted 120,000 hectares of wheat this winter season, aiming to produce 600,000 tons of the crop. However, the quelea bird population poses a significant threat, with one bird capable of eating three times its body size and consuming 10 grams of grain per day.

"To combat this, the department has established hubs in every ward for farmers to report quelea bird sightings and infestations, enabling swift and effective responses. The government's efforts aim to minimize the economic damage caused by the quelea birds, which can destroy up to 50% of the entire winter crop if left unchecked."
