Zimbabwean trail runner Arabella Schneeberger made a remarkable debut on the European trail running scene at the Matterhorn Ultraks in Zermatt, Switzerland, in August 2024. Facing a field of elite international athletes, Schneeberger finished 8th among female competitors and 46th overall, clocking a time of 4 hours and 2 minutes.

"Participating in such a prestigious race in Europe for the first time was a dream come true," Schneeberger remarked. "The support from spectators along the entire route, even at the highest peaks, was overwhelming and made the experience truly unforgettable."

The 32km race, featuring an elevation gain of 2,000 meters, posed a significant challenge for all runners. Schneeberger, who had a dedicated crew supporting her at the halfway point, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to race amidst the stunning mountain scenery.

"Trail running differs from other types of running due to its emphasis on nature and the outdoors," Schneeberger explained. "It's not just about speed or distance; it's about the adventure, the experiences, and respecting our natural environment."

Despite the growing popularity of trail running in Zimbabwe, only a few local athletes have participated in major European events. Schneeberger hopes her recent achievement will inspire more Zimbabwean trail runners to compete internationally.

"The Zimbabwean trail running community is incredibly supportive and talented," she said. "I hope my experience at the Matterhorn Ultraks encourages others to seek out international opportunities and showcase their talents on a global stage."

Schneeberger plans to use the knowledge and experience gained from her European debut to enhance her training and future performances, while also contributing to the growth of the sport in Zimbabwe.

"I'm thrilled with my top-10 finish and eager to see where my trail running journey leads next," she concluded. "I look forward to sharing my passion for the sport and inspiring more people to embrace the adventure and camaraderie of trail running."

Upcoming Races and Future Plans

Arabella Schneeberger has an exciting lineup of races for the remainder of the year, reflecting her ongoing dedication and ambition in trail running.

First on her agenda is the RunNyanga, a 33km race with 1,300 meters of elevation. "I'm excited to experience this race for the first time and aim to reach the podium," Schneeberger shared. "Most importantly, I want to run hard, have fun, and enjoy the adventure!"

Next, Schneeberger will head to Cape Town for the UTCT 35km race, featuring 2,000 meters of elevation. Thrilled to participate in this international event, she looks forward to testing her abilities against global competitors.

Lastly, Schneeberger will return to a race close to her heart—Skyrun Zim. Having previously placed 5th and 4th in this 32km race with 1,400 meters of elevation, she aims to secure a podium finish this year. "I've learned valuable lessons from my past experiences at Skyrun Zim, and I'm determined to make this year's race my best yet," she explained.

Looking beyond this year, Schneeberger is already planning for an action-packed 2024. "My dream is to return to Europe for the summer race season and compete in multiple events," she said. "I'm focused on turning this vision into reality and continuing to grow as an athlete on the international stage."

As Arabella Schneeberger continues to push boundaries and embrace new challenges, her trail running journey stands as a testament to her unwavering dedication, passion, and determination.
