The Zimbabwe Kobudo National Team has been invited to compete in the prestigious International Combat Organisation World Martial Arts Tournament, set to take place in Frankfurt, Germany, from October 11-13. Leading the team is Shihan Wilfred Mashaya, the reigning Kobudo (weapons) World Champion, who will be defending his title on the global stage.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Shihan Mashaya said, "It’s an honour to represent Zimbabwe on the world stage once again. We've been working hard and are eager to showcase our skills in Germany."
At the previous ICO tournament held in England in 2023, both Shihan Mashaya and his student, Sensei Vincent Fambira, were crowned world champions in the Weapons category. This year’s Zimbabwean squad is composed of 20 members, including 7 adult male competitors, 3 adult female competitors, 4 boys, 4 girls, and 2 officials.
Shihan Mashaya is a firm believer in nurturing young talent, actively championing the Junior Policy and the "Catch Them Young" initiative, which emphasizes the importance of youth development in sports. Among the team’s participants, 8 young athletes, aged between 7 and 15, will be representing Zimbabwe on this prestigious platform.
As the team finalizes preparations, they are reaching out for sponsorship from the corporate sector and well-wishers to help cover the costs of their participation. Months of rigorous training have gone into ensuring the athletes are fully prepared to compete at the highest level.
Shihan Mashaya’s achievements, both as a competitor and coach, continue to inspire many Zimbabweans, proving that discipline, commitment, and hard work lead to success. As the founder of the Zim Ninja Academy, he remains dedicated to expanding the Kobudo discipline and ensuring Zimbabwe’s continued prominence on the global martial arts stage.
