Glenview North Member of Parliament Happymore Chidziva was taken into custody on Tuesday, facing rape allegations, according to the alleged victim's attorney.
The Citizens Coalition for Change lawmaker, who is related to the teenager's family through marriage – being the husband of her aunt – is accused of showering the minor with gifts before repeatedly assaulting her.
Lawyer Webster Jiti, representing the teen's family, had written to the police on September 20, seeking an update on the criminal case filed earlier this month.
Expressing concern over delays in Chidziva's apprehension, Jiti's letter to the Harare Central Police Victim Friendly Unit stated:
"Our client is perturbed by the inordinate delays in arresting the accused. We kindly request your office to take the accused into custody pending completion of investigations."
On Tuesday, Jiti confirmed Chidziva's arrest, stating: "The Zimbabwe Republic Police has informed me of Chidziva's apprehension. The case is scheduled for initial remand on Wednesday."
