A Tunisian court has sentenced presidential candidate Ayachi Zammel to six months in prison on charges of document forgery, his lawyer informed Reuters on Wednesday. This marks the second prison sentence for Zammel in a single week, just days before the upcoming presidential election.
The ruling has intensified concerns over the fairness of the election, with opposition parties and civil society groups fearing that the process may be rigged to ensure the re-election of President Kais Saied. Last week, Zammel was sentenced to 20 months in prison on separate charges of falsifying popular endorsements.
"This is yet another unjust ruling, a clear attempt to weaken his position in the election, but we will fight for his rights until the very end," Zammel's lawyer, Abdessattar Massoudi, told Reuters.
Zammel is one of only three approved candidates for the presidency, alongside the incumbent Kais Saied and Zouhair Magzhaoui. Political tensions in Tunisia have escalated as the October 6 election approaches, particularly after the electoral commission, appointed by Saied, disqualified three prominent candidates earlier this month.
The disqualifications have sparked protests from opposition groups and civil society organizations, further fueling concerns of electoral manipulation.
