The water crisis in Chitungwiza has taken a dire turn, prompting desperate residents to appeal to Prophet Walter Magaya's Wistmer Investments for intervention. Despite past controversies surrounding Magaya's proposed Chitungwiza Smart and Green City Transformation Project, residents are willing to give him a chance to provide clean and portable water.
"A drop of water is like a drop of gold to us now," said Emily Moyo, a Chitungwiza resident. "We're begging Prophet Magaya to help us. The council has failed us."
Chitungwiza's water woes are nothing new. The town has struggled with inconsistent supply, contamination, and infrastructure issues for years.
"We've been living without water for years," said Thomas Mapfumo, a Zengeza 3 resident. "Our children are sick from drinking contaminated water. We need a solution now."
Prophet Magaya's Wistmer Investments has proposed a comprehensive plan to transform Chitungwiza's service delivery system, including water supply.
"We're not concerned about the politics; we just want access to clean water," said Sarah Ncube, a Seke Unit O resident. "If Prophet Magaya can deliver, we're willing to give him a chance."
While some have raised concerns about Magaya's motives and the project's potential impact on the town's autonomy, residents are increasingly desperate for relief.
"We've been promised solutions before, but nothing has materialized," said Jabulani Moyo, a St. Mary's resident. "We hope Wistmer Investments will be different. We can't continue living like this."
The government has taken notice of Chitungwiza's water crisis and intervened to increase the town's water supply capacity. Wistmer Investments has already drilled and rehabilitated nearly 20 boreholes in the Manyame Rural District Council area, which will also supply Chitungwiza.
While challenges persist, there are signs of progress. The Zimbabwe Water and Sanitation Project, funded by ZimFund, has replaced old and broken water distribution pipes, benefiting over 1,300 households in Chitungwiza.
As Chitungwiza residents plead for relief, it's clear that the water crisis requires urgent attention. Prophet Magaya's Wistmer Investments may offer a viable solution, but transparency and accountability are crucial.
"We just want to live like normal human beings, with access to clean water," said Emily Moyo. "Is that too much to ask?"
