Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) is appealing against the penalty set by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Mashonaland Central Province Disciplinary Authority against Nzvimbo Primary school teacher Tarisai Matthew Macharaga.
Macharaga was found guilty of assaulting Ephraim Rangwani who is a friend of Nzvimbo Secondary School Deputy Headmaster Shylock Kajau.
Kajau was convicted of sexual assault and sentenced to 40 days in jail or ZWL$40 000.
Nzvimbo Magistrates’ Circuit Court sentenced Macharaga to 30 days imprisonment or ZWL$10 000 after finding him guilty of assaulting Rangwani.
Rangwani also lost his job for bringing the Public Service into disrepute by the Disciplinary Authority.
Macharaga punched Rangwani three times after he had confronted him about the sexual harassment allegations against Kajau.
Rangwani reportedly replied Macharaga that he was not his boss and said, “zamu remukadzi wako rakakosha chii, rinoshamisira chii (What’s special about your wife’s bust)?”
In a letter addressed to Macharaga, Mashonaland Central Provincial Education Director A Mutenha said Machagara assaulted and inflicted injuries on Marangwa as evidenced by medical reports.
“The Disciplinary Authority noted that it was not in dispute that you physically assaulted Rangwani as evidenced by your own admission.
“Although you claimed that you were extremely provoked by the words uttered by Rangwani, you should have resolved the matter amicably,” reads the letter.
PTUZ Mashonaland Central Provincial Coordinator Fannuel Mabhugu said the union will challenge the penalty against Macharaga.
“The travesty of justice here is that a man whose wife has been sexually harassed by an unprofessional manager is the one who lost his job.
“This is a mockery of justice which stinks to high heaven.
“Facts were deliberately twisted and falsified to portray Macharaga a violent man yet he was extremely provoked by Rangwani’s careless utterances,” he said.
ZimNow reached out to Mutenha, who said he cannot comment on the issue.
