British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Peter Vowels, met with Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Kazembe Kazembe, to discuss key issues affecting the UK-Zimbabwe relationship. The meeting, held at Kazembe's Harare office, focused on immigration and heritage issues, including the repatriation of human remains taken during the colonial era .

Ambassador Vowels emphasized the UK's commitment to improving relations with Zimbabwe, stating that they aim to work as "genuine partners" across various areas. He highlighted the importance of addressing the colonial past and its challenges, particularly regarding human remains. "We're prepared to do everything we can to facilitate the return of remains to their families and put this issue to rest," he said.

Minister Kazembe confirmed plans to repatriate 11 human remains of liberation war icons from the UK. "The remains are a critical issue, and we're glad the UK has pledged to work with us," he stated. A team has been sent to the UK to identify the remains, and discussions are ongoing.

This development marks a significant step forward in Zimbabwe's efforts to re-engage with the international community, particularly the UK. The country's history with the UK is complex, with Zimbabwe gaining independence in 1980 after being colonized by the British South Africa Company in 1890 .
