Zimbabwe Republic Police has finally compensated Amos Siska, a Gweru resident who suffered brutal assault at the hands of law enforcement agents four years ago.
Siska received ZWG143,368, bringing closure to a long and arduous battle for justice.
In April 2020, Siska, then 48, was queuing at Stanbic Bank in Gweru when ZRP officers, enforcing national lockdown regulations, violently assaulted him and other residents. Siska suffered severe injuries, including a fractured arm, and was left traumatized.
With the help of Reginald Chidawanyika from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, Siska sued ZRP Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga and Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Hon. Kazembe Kazembe for damages. After a full trial in April 2022, Gweru Provincial Magistrate Miriam Banda ordered Matanga and Hon. Kazembe to pay compensation to Siska.
However, Matanga and Hon. Kazembe initially refused to comply with the court order, prompting Siska's lawyer to initiate contempt of court proceedings and threaten arrest.
