Mclean Mpiyabo, a 24-year-old resident of Tynwald North, Harare, has been sentenced to six months in prison after being found guilty of unlawfully dealing in currency. The Harare Magistrates’ Court handed down the sentence following his arrest during an undercover police operation.
The incident occurred on September 19, 2024, when undercover police officers observed Mpiyabo conducting illegal currency exchanges involving United States dollars (USD) and Zimbabwean dollars (Zim dollars or ZiG) on the black market. Posing as potential customers, the officers engaged Mpiyabo and proposed a deal to exchange ZiG for USD. After agreeing on an exchange rate, Mpiyabo was handed USD20 in marked trap money.
In return, Mpiyabo transferred ZiG400 via EcoCash, a mobile money platform widely used in Zimbabwe. Moments after the exchange, Mpiyabo was apprehended by law enforcement. Key evidence, including the marked USD20 trap money, EcoCash transaction records, and Mpiyabo's cellphone, was presented in court to secure his conviction.
