Government has announced a major initiative to renovate and enhance sports facilities across Zimbabwe, aiming to uplift infrastructure at existing stadia while also developing new venues. This plan seeks to improve access to quality sporting facilities and position Zimbabwe as a hub for international sports competitions.
During a post-Cabinet press briefing on Tuesday, Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Jenfan Muswere, outlined proposals for private sector participation in the refurbishment and maintenance of sports stadia.
"Cabinet has approved strategies aimed at developing, refurbishing, upgrading, repairing, and maintaining the country’s sports stadia," Muswere stated, highlighting the crucial role of private investment in achieving these goals.
The initiative prioritises construction a new state-of-the-art stadium in Mt. Hampden, part of the broader vision for Zimbabwe’s New City development. Other significant projects include the refurbishment of iconic venues such as Dzivarasekwa, Gwanzura, and Mabvuku stadia in Harare, alongside Barbourfields, Luveve, and White City in Bulawayo. Further upgrades are planned for Ascot in Gweru and Chipadze in Bindura.
Efforts to bring the National Sports Stadium in Harare up to Confederation of African Football standards are already "at an advanced stage of completion," according to Minister Muswere. He expressed optimism about the progress, emphasising that modernizing the facility is essential for hosting international competitions.
Government plans to leverage funding from international initiatives like FIFA's Forward 2.0 Funding Program, which supports global sports development. Minister Muswere stressed the importance of collaboration with the private sector to ensure the sustainability of these projects.
Beyond enhancing local sporting events, the government envisions these developments as catalysts for economic growth and youth empowerment. "Investing in our sports facilities is investing in our youth and future generations," Muswere said, underscoring the long-term benefits of the initiative.
Government’s strategic shift reflects a broader vision to improve sporting infrastructure nationwide. Plans include replicating refurbishment strategies in other cities and towns to expand access for athletes and fans.
By modernising its sports facilities, Zimbabwe aims to strengthen its position as a competitive player on the international sports stage, offering a platform for athletes to thrive and boosting the country’s potential to host prestigious global events.
