Zimbabwe Newspapers (1980) Limited, the country's largest media conglomerate, has announced significant changes to its senior management team as part of a comprehensive digital transformation process.
The publicly-listed and state-controlled company, which operates a chain of newspapers, television and radio stations, and commercial printing services, has appointed veteran journalist William Chikoto as acting chief executive officer.
Chikoto, formerly the group editorial executive, will work alongside interim senior managers to oversee the transition. The changes follow the departure of long-serving CEO Pikirayi Deketeke, CFO Farai Matanhire, and CMO Tapuwa Mandimutsira, who have been sent on leave pending removal.
The shake-up heralds a new era for Zimpapers, which is poised to adopt a cutting-edge digital platform known as Superdesk. This innovative model disrupts traditional newsroom structures, workflows, and content production processes, enabling the company to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
As part of its transformation, Zimpapers will soon appoint a new editorial boss to oversee the digital overhaul. The company's newspapers, including The Herald, Sunday Mail, Chronicle, and Sunday News, will undergo significant changes, along with its radio stations, such as Star FM, Diamond FM, and Capitalk FM.
Zimpapers' digital applications, including its mobile app and SMS/MMS services, will also be revamped to provide a more personalized and engaging experience for audiences.
The transformation is part of a broader trend in the media industry, where companies are shifting from traditional brand-centric models to platform-focused approaches. This enables them to support multiple brands, connect content production and audiences, and drive monetization.
By embracing new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and automation, Zimpapers aims to deliver compelling consumer experiences, build larger audiences, and ensure long-term
