Clement Kufeketa, widely known as Coach Longy, is a revered basketball coach in Zimbabwe. With over a decade of experience, his profound impact on the sport has not only inspired countless young players but also helped shape the future of basketball in the country.

Reflecting on his early beginnings, Coach Longy fondly remembers the moment he was introduced to basketball. “I was just a teenager when my physical education teacher in high school introduced me to the game,” he recalls.

“I was immediately drawn to the fast-paced and strategic nature of basketball. From that moment on, I was hooked.” He began playing for his school team, and his passion for the sport quickly grew into a lifelong commitment.

Like many athletes, Coach Longy faced significant challenges during his playing days. “We didn’t have the best facilities or equipment, but we made do with what we had,” he explains. These experiences instilled in him a sense of resourcefulness and adaptability, qualities that have become cornerstones of his coaching philosophy.

“Those challenges taught me valuable lessons, and they continue to serve me well as a coach,” he says. Transitioning into coaching brought a new set of obstacles, such as managing player expectations and maintaining team dynamics.

However, his approach is rooted in empathy and effective communication. “I’ve learned to prioritise communication and empathy, ensuring that each player feels valued and supported,” he shares.

When it comes to coaching, Coach Longy emphasizes the importance of mastering the basics. “It’s essential to focus on developing basic skills, such as dribbling, shooting, and passing,” he says.

“From there, you can build more complex strategies and tactics.” Positive reinforcement also plays a significant role in his methodology. “Creating a supportive environment where players feel encouraged is crucial. It fosters growth and boosts confidence,” he explains.

Coach Longy’s passion for basketball was deeply influenced by his high school coach, who recognized his potential and nurtured his talent. “He believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself,” he reflects.

“His guidance and mentorship shaped my career and instilled in me a desire to pay it forward.” Now, as a coach, he strives to inspire and mentor the next generation of basketball players in Zimbabwe.

For young athletes aiming to excel in basketball, Coach Longy has valuable advice. “Work hard, stay dedicated, and always be willing to learn,” he says.

“Surround yourself with positive influences and supportive people who believe in you.” He also underscores the importance of education, urging players to maintain a balance between their athletic pursuits and academic responsibilities.

In his dual roles as a coach for school teams and the Green Stars Basketball Club, Coach Longy has developed effective strategies to manage his responsibilities. “I prioritize my time and focus on the specific needs of each team,” he explains. “I also make sure to communicate effectively with my players, assistants, and administrators to ensure everyone is on the same page.”

Outside of basketball, Coach Longy enjoys spending time with his family and friends. “I’m a bit of a movie buff, and I love watching films in my free time,” he shares. Recognising the importance of self-care, he values personal time to recharge and maintain his physical and mental well-being.

One of the most memorable moments in Coach Longy’s career was leading his school team to a national championship victory.

“It was an incredible feeling, seeing my players overcome adversity and achieve their goals,” he recalls. “It reminded me why I coach: to make a positive impact on young lives and help them grow into capable, confident individuals.”

Looking to the future, Coach Longy has ambitious goals for basketball in Zimbabwe. “I hope to see the sport continue to grow and develop, with more resources and opportunities available to our players,” he says. “I’d like to establish a strong, sustainable basketball program that produces talented players and inspires the next generation of coaches and leaders.”

With his unwavering dedication, vast expertise, and passion for basketball, Coach Longy’s influence on the sport is undeniable. His commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting basketball in Zimbabwe ensures that his legacy will endure for years to come.
